Objective: Distinguishing between the short A sound and the short E sound
- Many English learners have hard time distinguishing the short A sound from the short E sound, and vice versa.
- Here, I want to offer a short cut to help you compare those two sounds with sample words. Just click gas and guess to compare these two words side by side. You also can go through the whole list to see more sample words.

- In the following example, when you click on the word gnat, the program will automatically select the word net. Note that the letter G is silent in the word gnat.
- You can press 1, 2, or 3 to play the word gnat, net, or at respectively. You can press the space bar to play the short A sound or the short E sound, depending on which list box is selected.

I hope that you can distinguish the subtle difference between the short A sound and the short E sound now. If you still have trouble, use the video clips to help you position the tongue.
