Day 16 --- The Long I Sound vs. The Short I Sound

Objective: Distinguishing between the long I sound and the Short I sound
  1. Choose the long I sound and the Short I sound.
  2. Learn the patterns and rules for the long I sound and for the short I sound.
  3. Select a word. In this example, when you click on the word bite, the program will automatically select the word bit.
  4. You can press 1, 2, or 3 to play the word bite, bit, or boot respectively. You can press the space bar to play the long I sound or the short I sound depending on which list box is selected.

Now if you learn the words mite and mitt, you shall apply the pattern to know that the letter I in mite is pronounced as the long I sound and that in mitt is pronounced as the short I sound.

  1. In the following example, you learn the IGHT pattern that the letter I is pronounced as the long I sound and the GH is silent.
  2. When you click on the word height, the program will automatically select the word hit.
  3. You can press 1, 2, or 3 to play the word height, hit, or heart respectively. You can press the space bar to play the long I sound or the short I sound depending on which list box is selected.

Now if you learn the words blight, you shall apply the IGHT pattern to know that the letter I in blight is pronounced as the long I sound and the letter GH is silent.

Tip from Xin: I often mispronounced the words aisle, island, isle, and islet because I read them as they are spelled. Once I realized that the silent letter S, I have no trouble pronouncing them. For the word aisle, just remember it as I'll. Try it.
