Day 19 --- The IA Rule

Objective: Realizing the different sounds IA can have.

IA has many different sounds. We will look into each one and help you learn the patterns.

In the following list of words, the letter A is pronounced as the long A sound because of the ATION pattern and the silent E rule. If two vowels are together and both of them make clear sound, one of the clear vowels is stressed, so it is longer. Practice the following words.

If you have a hard time saying the sounds, try to insert the y sound between the long I sound and the long A sound. For example, try to say negotiate as N-E-G-O-SH-E-y-A-T.
