Objective: Realizing the different sounds IE can have.
IE has many different sounds. We will look into each one and help you learn
the patterns.
In the following list of words, the letter E is pronounced as the long E sound
because of the silent E rule. Remember that the letter I is silent.

In the following list of words, the letter E is pronounced as the long E sound
because of the patterns of IEF and IELD, Remember that the letter I is silent.
Also, if the word ending with IE is a two syllable word such as cookie, IE is
pronounced as the long E sound. On the other hand, if a word ending with IE is a
one syllable word such die, IE is pronounced as the long I sound.


In the following list of words, EW is pronounced as the long U sound as in
few and the letter I is silent.

In the
following list of words, the letter I is pronounced as the long I sound and the
letter E is pronounced as the schwa sound. If two vowels are together and both
of them make clear sound, one of the clear vowels is stressed, so it is longer.
Practice the following words.
If you have a hard time saying the sounds, try to insert the y sound between
the long I sound and the schwa sound. For example, try to say client as
K-L-I-ye-N-T.
 In the following list of words, the
letters IE is pronounced as the schwa sound because of the CIEN, and TIEN
patterns.

In the following list of words, the
letters IER is pronounced as the IR sound.
 Look up the
dictionary for the following words which don't have a pattern to follow.
 If you feel comfortable pronouncing a word, you can remove the word by
pressing the delete key. You will need to invest 15 to 30 minutes a day to go through the list
again. It
may take a week for you to go through the list. Don't worry about if you
remember the pattern or not because you will remember it later. |
