Objective: Distinguishing between the long O sound and the short O sound
  1. Choose the long O sound and the short O sound.
  2. Learn the patterns and rules for the long O sound and for the short O sound.
  3. Select a word. In this example, when you click on the word dote, the program will automatically select the word dot.
  4. You can press 1, 2, or 3 to play the word dote, dot, or date respectively. You can press the space bar to play the long O sound or the short O sound depending which list box is selected.
  5. Use our auto-play feature and other useful features to help you practice the words.

Now if you learn the words code and cod, you shall apply the pattern, which is from the silent E rule, to know that the letter A in code is pronounced as the long O sound and that in cod is pronounced as the short O sound. Here are some more sample words following the silent E rule.

  2. You can press 1, 2, or 3 to play the word goat, got, or gait respectively. You can press the space bar to play the long O sound or the short O sound depending which list box is selected.

Now if you learn the words hoax and hat, you shall apply the pattern, which is from the OA Rule, to know that the letter O in hoax is pronounced as the long O sound and the letter A is silent, and that the letter O in hot is pronounced as the short O sound. Here are some more sample words following the two vowel OA rule.
