Day 25 --- The OA Rule

Objective: Remembering that the OA rule is from the two vowels rule and that OAR is pronounced as the OR sound. Please see the OA patterns we have collected for you.

The two vowels rule states that when any two vowels are together, the first one says its long sound and the second is silent. Since the letter O and the letter A are two vowel letters, OA are pronounced as the long O sound as in boat or the OR sound in broad sometimes.

  1. Select the Rules tab.
  2. Choose ...OA... as below.
  3. Click >> button as below until you see the similar words.
  4. Go through the words in the list box.
  5. You will see that the letter O is in red and the letter A is in gray color, meaning that the letter A is silent and only the letter O is pronounced as the letter O itself.
  6. Now if you learn a new word such as soak, you shall apply the OA rule to help you remember that the word soak is pronounced as S-O-K.

There are exceptions. If OA is followed by the letter R, you need to pronounced OAR together as the OR sound in roar.
