Objective: Learning the silent E rule to help you understand why the letter A in fate is pronounced as
the long A sound and that in fat as the short A sound
The
silent E rule applies to most of one syllable words such as fate vs. fat, bite vs. bit, hope vs. hop, cute vs. cut. It also applies to words with two or more syllable sometimes. The rule of the thumb is to know where the stress is. For example, the word combine can be broken as com-'bine and the silent E rule applies to the second part bine since the second part is stressed.

in fate and that in fat are pronounced as the long A sound and
the short A sound respectively.
